Cisco Systems Inc. is a multinational corporation founded in 1984 in San Francisco, from where its name derives. Currently established in San Jose, California, the company has more than 70,000 employees and deals with the design and implementation of technologies and services in the field of telecommunications , being one of the largest manufacturers of network equipment.
In March 2000, Cisco was named the most valuable company in the world, with a market capitalization of more than 500 billion dollars.
Although Cisco was not the first company to develop and sell routers, it was one of the first to commercially successfully sell routers that supported multiple network protocols. Today, the largest Cisco routers are primarily used to deliver IP packets and MPLS frames.
